details of death

In 1914, at the beginning of World War I, conscripted — as a citizen of Prussia — into the German Imperial Army.

Sent to the Western Front. Found himself near Verdun, where the Germans were preparing for a massive attack in early 1916 (took the form of the so‑called Battle of Verdun).

Arrested by the Germans and accused of prob. helping two Poles who had deserted and defected to the French side. The indictment blamed him for allegedly failing to notify the German military authorities of the escapees' plans (sources say „failure to disclose the identities of two Polish soldiers”).

Sentenced to death by a German military court and shot.
